The Rocchetta Nervina rock pools (the “laghetti”) are a series of natural pools carved into the rock by the Barbaira stream, just upstream of the village of Rocchetta Nervina. The water is clear and, between the smooth rock walls, it takes on emerald-green reflections: in summer it is one of the best-loved spots inland for a cool swim.
They are in the Val Nervia, about 35 minutes by car from Bordighera.
The Barbaira stream
The Barbaira comes down from the mountains behind the village and, just before the houses, flows through a narrow, deep gorge, the Barbaira canyon. At Rocchetta it is joined by the Rio Oggia: the two watercourses give the village its curious “Y” shape. Along the way the water has shaped basins and little waterfalls, linked by old stone bridges.
How to get to the rock pools
Leave your car in the village and continue on foot. The first pools are just above the houses: before the old bridge, a path on the left follows the stream to a basin where you can swim.
The Sentiero Balcone
For a longer walk, the Sentiero Balcone starts from the oratory, passes the little church of San Bernardo and in about 50 minutes reaches the Cin bridge, at the entrance to the canyon; from there it continues to the Pau bridge. Along the way you look down on the pools and rocks of the stream.
Canyoning in the Barbaira
Upstream of the Cin bridge, the Barbaira canyon is one of the best-known canyoning descents in the area, with jumps, slides and pools. It should only be tackled with the right equipment and with experienced guides.
